Revision
Coming into this class fresh out of high school, I wasn’t a strong writer for the simple fact I never used “I say” in any of my work. All high school I was taught that saying “I”, “me”, or “my” in any essay was bad. Not only in high school was this taught but also in middle school. I remember my 5th grade English teacher always said, “never use “I” in your paragraphs. You don’t want to sound like slim shady.” She used the example of Eminem’s hit song “My Name is” and told us to never introduce yourself to the reader. In high school, the same rules apply. Personal experience was not what was looked for. Every essay I wrote, I steered very clear of using any “I say” because I knew if I did, it would result in a bad grade. It became so normal to me that when writing essays, it didn’t cross my head to use any personal examples.

paragraph from first essay
When coming to college and going to my first writing class, I was immediately confused. It was encouraged that I used my own personal beliefs which were so weird and strange to me. It almost felt illegal. I was taught mywhole life to not do something then it’s now encouraged? The first 2 or 3 essays I wasn’t fully comfortable writing about myself. I wasn’t even sure how to write about myself. But over the span of the 4 months I was in this class, it became so simple to add my views and honestly made my essays stronger than I ever could have pictured. these photos I have inserted show a lot of progress within my “I say” writing skill. I am much more comfortable with my voice and much more confident using it in my papers.

paragraph from last essay
The improvement I have made is very noticeable and it is very clear on my stance and my voice. Something I never used in high school.
